Tropical Analysis: The Films of Joaquim Pedro de Andrade A Special Showcase of the 45th New York Film Festival
September 29 – October 9, 2007
A father of Brazil’s Cinema Novo movement of the 1950s,
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade remained forever true to its
core motto: “A camera in the hand and an idea in
the head.” Over two decades, he created films that
explored reality’s grim underpinnings, but were also unrestrained
celebrations of a changing country. He filled
the screen with vibrant colors and lighting and elicited
remarkably physical performances from many of Brazil’s
best actors. Tropical Analysis is a complete retrospective
of de Andrade’s work, screening all 14 features and shorts
by the major if little-known director. The series has been made
possible by de Andrade’s family, who have
finished their longtime effort to restore all of his films to their full beauty.
Screenings at the Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center, 65th Street between Broadway & Amsterdam Avenues on the upper level.
Admission: $11 Adult, $7 FSLC Member & Student (with valid photo ID); $7 Senior(65+) discount only for screenings Mon - Fri before 6pm.
