Its premise has a 1950’s purity: Toxins from a U.S. military base flow into the Han River causing the birth of a mutant creature (imagine the world’s hugest, most malevolent guppy) which proceeds to terrorize Seoul. When it grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to save her. As in his great 2003 cop film Memories of Murder, Bong uses a highly commercial genre to offer a pointed commentary on Korean society, with its conformity and greed as well its increasing alienation from America.
