Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s passionate, exquisitely crafted new movie has the potency of genuine myth. In 1944, young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) travels to a sprawling old house in the dark forests of northern Spain. Her mother is ready to give birth to a baby fathered by her new husband, the monstrous fascist Captain Vidal (Sergi López, the very incarnation of pitch black evil). As the rebel forces close in, Ofelia escapes to a treacherous yet alluring underworld ruled by the fearsome creature Pan (Doug Jones). She is called upon to carry out a series of perilous tasks in an effort to save the life of her unborn brother, but then she’s faced with a darker question: Into what kind of world will this child be born?
In an era of cut-rate fantasizing, del Toro’s eye-popping movie gives us something virtually unprecedented in contemporary cinema: A world of wonders, where the historical, the political and the mythological become one.
Trust me, I'm a doctor. Yeah, right. (Warning: not for the faint of heart.)
