Gardens in Autumn

GARDENS IN AUTUMN
Series: The 44th New York Film Festival [Sept 29 - Oct 15 2006]
Director: Otar Iosseliani, Country: France, Release: 2006, Runtime: 116

In the floating world of Otar Iosseliani (Monday Morning NYFF’ 02), people betray their vanities and fears with sardonically amusing, telltale eccentricities, as they amble headlong through a series of comic misadventures. In his latest symphony of folly, Iosseliani's warmest and most winning, we follow the up-and-down fortunes of various cabinet ministers, unseated or enthroned seemingly at the whim of Parisian protestors. Vincent (Severin Blanchet), liberated by his eviction from the corridors of power, is free to chase women, drink with his buddies, and receive advice from his old mother (hilariously played by Michel Piccoli in drag).

The luminously composed cinemagraphy by William Lubtschansky brings a measure of autumnal stoicism to the giddy proceedings.
