Two Great SheepDirector Liu Hao crafts a caustic, bittersweet parable of life in rural China, with subtle political overtones. Uncle Deshan lives a hardscrabble farmer’s life in a poor mountainous area. One day, two rare foreign sheep appear like mythological beings at his door. The two animals, seemingly heaven sent, are gifts from the local government meant to improve the farmer’s life and the village economy. Overnight, Uncle Deshan is the talk of his community. But the heavenly creatures are capricious beings requiring special food and care. They become surrogate children on whom all manner of attention is lavished by the doting parents—until an incident occurs that causes the municipal leaders to retaliate. China, 2004. 100 min.
