South of the Clouds
Living in a northern city with a badgering daughter, middle-aged Xu Daqin dreams of travelling to Yunnan Province, in the mountains of southwest China near Tibet. This is where he might have lived had he not been forced into an unsatisfying marriage and humdrum existence in the prosaic north. After a friend dies he sets off, but gets only as far as mysterious Lugu Lake, with its primitive matriarchy and strong Tibetan Buddhist tradition. There unforeseen complications and strange encounters test his character and beliefs. Director Zhu Wen has made a moving and unsettling film that explores generational and cultural divides in contemporary China. China, 2004. 100 min. Preceded by MUSIC PALACE. As New York’s last Chinatown movie theater closes its doors, its three caretakers ruefully look back. Directed by Eric Lin. U.S.A, 2005. 9 min.
