Sequins
In a small town, people will talk. So when teenage Claire discovers she's pregnant, she escapes to a nearby town, finding refuge with a quiet outsider who teaches her a trade—fine embroidery for Parisian designers. Emulating the skills of her mentor, Claire learns the craft and, in another sort of apprenticeship, readies herself physically and emotionally for her baby. Mme. Melikian (the wondrous Ariane Ascaride) is mourning the death of her son in a motorcycle accident but through her growing bond with Claire she comes to terms with her own loss. First-time filmmaker Eléonore Faucher has created an atmosphere of simple elegance where, among the beautiful beads and brocades, two women help each other find the true meaning of their lives. France, 2004, 88 min. A New Yorker Films release.
