Admission: $10, $7 students(with valid photo ID), $6 MoMA & FSLC members, $5 for seniors; or purchase the special ND/NF Classics Series Pass for $24 that admits one to each film in the series. This pass is available only at the Walter Reade Theater box office (cash only).
During this 36th edition of New Directors/New Films, the Film Society is pleased to present past works from the festival in ND/NF Classics. This matinee series focuses on documentaries—those films that show us who we are, where we’ve been, and where we might be going. This year’s selections feature a broad range of styles—personal essays on family that also address larger social issues; films that attempt solutions to problems within communities; portraits of artists, eccentrics, beloved caregivers and everyday geniuses.
Barbet Schroeder is known for dramatic features such as Barfly and Reversal of Fortune, but we feature the documentary he made years before, about the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Actress Lee Grant’s resume as a director includes a documentary about women fighting for their rightful position in the workplace. Julia Loktev, whose first dramatic feature film is in New Directors/New Films this year, made an earlier appearance in the series with a documentary about her parents. And more recent films, such as Jehane Noujaim’s award-winning documentary on the controversial Al Jazeera news network, are part of the cinematic literature of current events.
These and our other ND/NF Classics have been on the cutting edge and have withstood the test of time. They have the honors to prove it. Nathaniel Kahn’s personal yet provocative My Architect was a 2004 Oscar® nominee, while Laura Poitras’ documentary My Country, My Country, from last year’s New Directors/New Films, was a 2007 nominee.
