ND/NF Classics: Documentaries from 20 Years of New Directors/New Films March 27 – 31
Sponsored by HBO Documentary Films.
This
year, as part of New Directors/New Films, we are pleased to present in
the Walter Reade Theater a special retrospective of ND/NF selections
from the last 20 years featuring American documentaries that are as
powerful and important today as when they were originally screened in
the festival. The independent filmmakers represented have examined many
different aspects of our world, from immigrant workers to young
runaways; from anti-war activists to the rise and fall of iconic
figures in our culture; from artists at work to crime and punishment;
and of course family issues, both functional and dysfunctional. The
material is still fresh, and these artists are still plying their craft.
Read
the original descriptions that the New Directors/New Films selection
committee wrote — they still hold true today. And to keep things in
historical perspective, double bills appear as originally programmed.
Groundbreaking at the time of their first release, these films retain
their relevance. Proof that New Directors/New Films has always sought
out nonfiction films that strive to change our world.
We expect most of the directors whose films are being shown in ND/NF Classics to introduce the screenings of their films.
