America’s pre-eminent film presentation organization, The Film Society of Lincoln Center was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international cinema, to recognize and support new filmmakers, and to enhance awareness, accessibility and understanding of the art among a broad, diverse and passionate filmgoing audience that numbers over 200,000 annually.
The Film Society is best known for two world-class international festivals -- The New York Film Festival (America’s most prestigious film event), and New Directors/New Films (celebrating new cinematic artists). The organization is also America’s leading gateway for world cinema, premiering contemporary work of emerging and established filmmakers in annual, sold-out series devoted to the cinema of France, Italy, Spain, Asia, Africa, Latin America and more. The Film Society’s prestige and influence within the film community is reflected in the many high profile special events that bring noted film artists to Alice Tully Hall or the Walter Reade Theater for one-on-one conversations or mini-tributes. Among these have been recent personal appearances by Steven Spielberg, Mel Brooks, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jeff Bridges, Christopher Walken, Mike Nichols and more. Our annual fundraiser – the Film Society Gala Tribute – has lauded established and evolving screen legends with star-studded black-tie events.
